One of the common questions we get asked at Lifestyle Real Estate in Guelph is, “What is a termite zone?”
Termite zones are areas that may have seen termite infestations in the past and could see them in the future. In Guelph, we do have a number of termite zones, but it’s nothing to be alarmed about.
Working with your local Realtor® can help you to identify whether the house you’re interested in might be in a termite zone. When you go with your Realtor® to look at a house, they should let you know if it’s in a termite zone or not — and you can also visit the City of Guelph’s website for termite maps and other helpful information.
On the City of Guelph’s website, you’ll be able to find all of the identified termite zones within the city. Their website also provides homeowners with resources for buying and selling property in a termite zone, landscaping in a termite zone, taking precautions not to move dirt or soil from a termite zone and complying with Guelph’s Termite Control Bylaw.
The City of Guelph has a designated termite control officer who is responsible for conducting termite inspections. If you are selling a home in a termite zone, you or your Realtor® are required to obtain a termite inspection from the termite control officer.
Guelph has a number of safeguards in place to protect homeowners and manage termites in these designated termite zones. While buying a home in a termite zone requires a bit more legwork and precautions, you shouldn’t let it stop you from purchasing your dream home.
